Daily English Conversation Using the Phrasal Verb “Lock Out”
Have you ever locked yourself out of something?
Lindsay: Hey Aubrey, what’s shaking?
Aubrey: Not much. How are you doing?
Lindsay: Pretty good. What’s going on in your world?
Aubrey: Today is an interesting day. My kid is back to school after spring break, thank goodness. But I want to ask you about something because my neighbors, a couple nights ago, lock themselves out of their house at midnight. They got home late, and they were locked out, they didn’t have spare keys. They called the locksmith, and they waited for hours for the locksmith.
Lindsay: It’s everyone’s worst nightmare, right?
Aubrey: I know. Have that ever happened to that you locked yourself out maybe of your house or of your car?
Lindsay: Yes, it has. I can’t think of the specific time at right now. That’s why always has spare keys is really good.
* what’s shaking 用來做寒喧與打招呼的開場,意即what’s happening; what’s up
*spare keys 備用鑰匙
* locksmith 鎖匠
Lock out of 停止進入, 被鎖在sth之外
Lock out of sth (your house, your car, internet banking, a safe). It means there is a hindrance or a blockage which is why you can’t move forward or enter.
Lindsay: I feel like every action movie that I have seen comes down to you have to enter the code and if you enter the wrong five times, everything blows up.
Aubrey: Exactly. You locked out and you can never hit it again. Have this ever happened to you, Lindsay, that you put your passwords too many times and been locked out?
Lindsay: Yes, especially banking passwords. Banks have very strict trigger that was a problem when I called in, have down it too many times, then you said the wrong thing with the security questions, that you trigger the thing that they don’t want to talk to anyone, like that we are hanging up, we won’t want to talk to you.
*hindrance, blockage 障礙;阻礙
*comes down to sth 談論到;歸結到;涉及
*blow up 充氣;爆炸;勃然大怒
* security questions 安全問題(通常用做身份驗證)
Lock out 雇主停工;阻止(工人)工作
It’s when any company prohibit its employees from working. A lockout is a work stoppage or denial of employment initiated by the management of a company during a labour dispute. The lockout prevents employees from working while a strike is when employees refuse to work.
Lock out的反義詞是Strike (罷工);前者為雇主所採取的暫時性停工、鎖廠;後者則是由員工所發起的停工、罷工。
A company will have a lock out and they stop employment, that don’t allow their employees to work until the contract had negotiated.
There was a big one in 2011, the union workers at American Crystal Sugar plants in Minnesota had a locked out, where the company locked out 30 hundred workers until they figured out their new contract.
Roleplay
Lindsay: Have you ever locked yourself out of something?
Aubrey: Yes! I got locked out of my car last summer at the lake!
Lindsay: Oh no! How did that happen?
Aubrey: I actually closed the trunk and then realized the keys were inside.
Lindsay: Oh no! What did you do?
Aubrey: We had to call a locksmith. And then we waited three hours for her to show up!
Lindsay: Oh, that’s the worst! Was she able to help?
Aubrey: Yes, she got the lock open. And then we went home and realized we were locked out of the house!
